In accordance with Article 7.1.6 of the Agreement of the Association of the American Chamber of Commerce in Macedonia (AmCham), the 10th Annual General Assembly will be held on September 14th, 2010 at Hotel Aleksandar Palace. The Assembly will include the election of new members of the Board of Directors, a review of the chamber’s operations and activities, and confirmation of new members. This year, AmCham will elect four (4) new members to serve on the AmCham Board of Directors. During regular controls at Macedonia’s border crossings in the period between May 10 and June 6, 2010, the customs officials seized a considerable quantity of goods bearing well-known brand names believed to be counterfeit.

Amcham Macedonia celebrated the World IPR day, 26th of April, organizing press conference in order to promote recently published “Trademark protection Guide”. The Guide was prepared from Igor Aleksandrovski and Emilija Apostolska Attorneys at Law and IPR Attorneys (members of the IPR Committee) and it was initially written in English (t and published on the Amcham Macedonia web site. It was mainly written to inform foreign companies interested in investing in Macedonia about the procedures and policies in registering their trademarks in Macedonia. Second phase was translating this guide into Macedonian (special thanks to Elena Trimcevska of Alkaloid, for translating it into Macedonian) and promote it to the Macedonian businesses, in order to understand the importance and value of registering their trademarks, and of course understand the value of Original.

On April 26, 2010 at the dumping ground Drisla, the Coordinative Body for IPR issues conducted the sixth public destruction of confiscated products which violated the Intellectual Property Rights in 2010. Items were destroyed where the legal process for the perpetrators has been completed. On this occasion, the following items were destroyed: 52.700 pirated DVDs and CDs, 3.064 boxes of cigarettes, 1.040 l alcohol, 44 boxes of medicaments, and 320 pieces of clothes.

720 false pars of sport shoes “Adidas” were found in a passenger vehicle, owned by a Macedonian citizen. The goods were intended for a company in Strumica. Pursuant to the provisions of the Law on Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, the Customs Administration of the Republic of Macedonia have initiated a procedure to verify the authenticity of the impounded goods.

AmCham IPR Committee has organized a series of workshops on IPR protection from 12-15 April in Skopje and in Bitola. Trainers from the US Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs have presented to an audience of judges, prosecutors and customs officials. 83 individuals were trained and were demonstrate with an examples of comparative practices in IPR protection within Europe an worldwide. The American Chamber of Commerce in Macedonia and the U.S. Embassy in Skopje organized a Business Mission to Macedonia by members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria. Around 20 International / US and Bulgarian companies visited Macedonia. The goal of this mission was to explore business opportunities and to establish new contacts. The Mission helped to increase the investment potential of the country and to improve the overall business climate in Macedonia.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Macedonia opened a discussion on Climate Change on 28 January with its Business Forum - Making the Environment Work for Macedonian Business. Speakers Ms. Linda Klare Repnik, Ms. Zoe Dawson and Ms Joanna Key presented their vision on measures the Macedonian business should undertake to enable the sustainable environmental protection and vv. how we can positively use our environment and still prevent its degradation, especially from a climate change point of view.
