Ongoing committee activities
Spring 2009 - Committee members met with a representative of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy to discuss the lack of regulation surrounding internships. The meeting was supported by Konekt, an NGO working to encourage corporate giving and volunteerism. At the meeting, members expressed the need for clear regulatory guidance given that educational institutions are bound to provide practical experience for their students and companies are currently forced to navigate a grey area in order to help. Further, companies would like to offer internships to non-students in a low risk and transparent atmosphere.
- In response, Amcham Macedonia will cooperate with Konekt to:
- Summarize stakeholder concerns and discuss them with responsible representatives at the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy and the Ministry of Education;
- In consultations with the relevant Ministries, identify the best path forward (e.g., legal or regulatory revisions);
- Provide opportunities for company representatives and other stakeholders to actively participate in the changes process;
- Coordinate the engagement of the expert community in drafting legal revisions;
- Draft a practical company guide on internships endorsed by both ministries.
Winter 2008 - The committee offered feedback on the implementation of the new Labor Law passed over the summer period to key decision-makers. AmCham, in turn, expressed concern that the implementing regulations of the Law had not been released in sufficient time to allow companies to comply.
